Scholars

Scholarship Selection Process
The Dobbyn Foundation has established a partnership with a community based Ugandan non-profit organization that identifies deserving and needy young people in the community. These students have done exceptionally well in primary school and on their comprehensive national exams, however due to repressive school fees, they are unable to further their education and attend secondary school.

All Dobbyn Foundation scholarships are determined by a variety of criteria and a process that is reviewed by a number of people to ensure adequate transparency and accountability.  Our selected partner organization in Africa selects a variety of students based on need, merit, PLE exams (national comprehensive exams), family situation, intellectuality curiosity and ability to succeed.  The partner organization meets with the potential scholar’s family and the parents or guardian sign a contract to acknowledge and agree that the child can and should attend secondary school.  The parent also has additional responsibilities to maintain the scholarship, including attendance at meetings, quick response for health concerns and a limited number of financial responsibilities (school uniform, books, mattress, etc.)

After reviewing the recommendations of our African partner organization, the Dobbyn Foundation’s Board of Directors formally vote to approve all scholarships.  Once selected these students are guaranteed a six year scholarship as long as they maintain a high academic standing.

Additionally the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors travel to East Africa to review general operating procedures, school conditions, and the overall efficiency of the program.  Verification of scholars’ academic standing, attendance, and overall welfare is confirmed via required documentation and interviews with students and staff.
