On September 16th, the Dobbyn Foundation elected Virginia Dooley and Joshua Smith as our newest Board Members. <br><br> Virginia currently works at Empower, where she is responsible for grants administration and individual fundraising. Virginia holds an MA in International Development Studies from the University of London - School of Oriental and African Studies. Virginia also spent a year in Kampala, Uganda where she worked as a counselor for urban refugees. <br><br> Joshua Smith is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Engineering. Joshua currently works at the Oracle Corporation, an enterprise software organization where he is a senior member of the technical staff. <br><br> Both Virginia and Josh bring diverse backgrounds, enthusiasm, and unique expertise to our organization. The event was held at the Bell in Hand on Wednesday May 23rd and with the help of over 75 attendees, the Dobbyn Foundation was able to raise approximately $1900 for secondary school children in East Africa. <br><br> "We were very happy with the turnout at the event and believe that this is the beginning of our organization becoming recognized throughout the Greater Boston area. Each event and fundraising opportunity gives us the ability to tell our story, with the end result being assisting as many children as possible," stated the Executive Director Kevin Bouchard. The Dobbyn Foundation has established a partnership with a Ugandan based non-profit organization that assists in finding children in need of financial resources for secondary school. This Ugandan non-profit organization researched, identified and selected children on the following criteria: national primary school examination test (PLE exam), primary school grades, leadership qualities, need based scholarship, ability to succeed and family support. <br><br> As a result of this search, the Dobbyn Foundation is excited to announce the names of its first class of scholarship students: Irene Tusiimi, Annet Kabagahi, Daniel Busobozi and Josephant Kugonza. These scholars will have all four years of secondary education paid for by the Dobbyn Foundation and we will continue to monitor their success in the coming years. The event will run from 6:30-9:30 pm and feature live music, appetizers and a cash bar. The $20 donation at the door will directly go to fund the Dobbyn Foundation's initiatives. The event is open to the public. <br><br> The Dobbyn Foundation was formed in 2005 out of the realization that without outside financial support for school fees, the majority of children in East Africa would never be able to achieve formal secondary schooling. Ann Marie and Kevin Bouchard, the Secretary and Executive Director respectively, both visited Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania during their trip. While in Uganda, Ann Marie and Kevin visited four primary schools and two secondary schools around the area of Kibale National Park, near the city of Fort Portal. Kevin and Ann Marie spent 5 days in Western Uganda visiting a Ugandan based non-profit organization that assists numerous primary schools and children surrounding Kibale National Park.
